Medical Students Run Free Local Clinic in the Bronx

In 1999, medical students at Einstein took on the mission of providing uninsured Bronx residents access to healthcare. They approached The Institute for Family Health, a federally qualified health center network, which sees all patients regardless of their ability to pay. The volunteer students and the institute operate the Einstein Community Health Outreach (ECHO) Free Clinic on Saturdays. Underserved patients in the South Bronx now have access to comprehensive primary care. Einstein students, under the guidance of attending physicians, get hands-on experience running every aspect of the clinic from the front desk to patient care. Many students say the most gratifying benefit is the personal connections they make with patients. (May 14, 2015)
