Einstein in the News

New England Journal of Medicine highlights research by Maja Oktay, M.D., Ph.D., George Karagiannis, D.V.M., Ph.D., and John Condeelis, Ph.D., on the mechanism by which some breast cancer tumor cells resist chemotherapy and go on to metastasize. Dr. Oktay is professor of pathology and of anatomy and structural biology; Dr. Karagiannis is a postdoctoral fellow in the department of anatomy and structural biology; Dr. Condeelis is the Judith & Burton P. Resnick Chair in Translational Research and professor and co-chair of anatomy and structural biology.

NCI’s Cancer Currents blog interviews Maja Oktay, M.D., Ph.D., about her recent research that found a previously unrecognized effect of chemotherapy. Her study, conducted primarily in mice, suggests that chemotherapy given before surgery for breast cancer can cause changes in cells in and around the tumor that are tied to an increased risk of the cancer spreading to other areas of the body. Dr. Oktay is professor of pathology and of anatomy and structural biology at Einstein and a cytopathologist at Montefiore.
