Dr. Fleischer is the Jeanne and Jacob Barkey Professor of Medicine, Director of the Division of Endocrinology, and Co- Director of the Diabetes Research Center of Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center.
A graduate of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, he performed his residency in Internal Medicine at Jacobi Medical Center, and his Fellowship in Endocrinology at Vanderbilt under the mentorship of Grant W. Liddle, M.D. He then joined the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he served as Chief of Endocrinology at Ben Taub General Hospital. At Baylor, he rose to the rank of Associate Professor of Medicine, remaining there until 1973, when he joined the faculty at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
In 1976, he was appointed Director of the Division of Endocrinology at Einstein, and in 1977 became the founding Director of the NIH-funded Diabetes Research and Training Center. In 1988, Dr. Fleischer was appointed Director of the Diabetes Research Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In 1999, he was also appointed Director of Endocrinology of Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Fleischer continues an active career in clinical endocrinology, research, and administration, with continuous involvement in the educational programs for students, residents, and especially, endocrine fellows.
His research has been on the regulation of polypeptide hormone production and secretion, especially that of insulin. For these studies, he has utilized conditionally transformed murine beta cell lines in which replication is controllable. These cells have also been studied by Dr. Fleischer as model systems for beta cell transplantation to treat diabetes. Dr. Fleischer has authored over 100 publications. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Endocrinology. He has been elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians.
