On Monday October 20, 2014, Dr. Arturo Casadevall was elected as a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM), announced at the IOM’s 44th annual meeting in Washington, D.C.  Election to the IOM, among the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine, recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care, and public health.

Those elected are selected by current, active members of the illustrious institute, which was established in 1970 by the National Academy of Science to provide independent, scientifically informed analyses and recommendations on health issues.

As a newly elected member, Dr. Casadevall will volunteer his services and expertise on IOM committees, boards and other activities. Examples of projects undertaken by the IOM during the past year include: studies on meeting the needs of those nearing the end of life; determining what is known about and how to reduce sport-related concussions in youth athletes; analyzing the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder in military and veteran populations; and enhancing governance and accountability in graduate medical education.

"Arturo is an innovative scientist and cherished mentor, as well as an authority on biosecurity and an important commentator on practicing science effectively and ethically," said Dr. Allen M. Spiegel, the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean at Einstein.

In addition to his election to the IOM, Dr. Casadevall is an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, serves as co-chair of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Board of Scientific counselors, is a member of the National Science Advisory Board of Biosecurity, and is editor-in-chief of mBio, the first open access general journal of the American Society for Microbiology.
