At the recent mini-retreat and symposium, “The Genomics of Aging and Exceptional Longevity,” co-hosted by Einstein’s Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Human Aging, Nathan Shock Center for the Basic Biology of Aging and Institute for Aging Research, Dr. Sofiya Milman was presented a Glenn Award for Research in Biological Mechanisms of Aging. The award recognizes Dr. Milman’s investigations of the clinical and biological characteristics of families with exceptional longevity.
Dr. Milman, who is assistant professor of medicine and a graduate of the Einstein Clinical Research Training Program, focuses her research on understanding how endocrine biology is regulated by the genome differently in individuals that experience healthy aging compared to those that face age-related illnesses and ailments. She accepted the award from Dr. Nir Barzilai, director of the three host centers, who was joined via Skype by Mark Collins, president of the Paul Glenn Foundation for Medical Research.
The Glenn Foundation funds research on the biology of aging, and aims to extend the healthy and morbidity-free years of life. Its Glenn Award, which was founded in 2007, provides $60,000 to researchers studying the biology of aging. Previous Einstein recipients of the Glenn Award include Drs. Jan Vijg, Ana Maria Cuervo, Yousin Suh, Jill Crandall and Nir Barzilai. Dr. Milman is the first early-career scientist with a clinical background at Einstein to receive the award.
