Sunday, November 17, 2013 was a special evening at Einstein, when more than 300 medical and graduate students took a break from their books and lab work to hit the dance floor at a homecoming dance reminiscent of their high school days. The ‘90s-themed party took place in Lubin Dining Hall, with students decked out in their finest ‘90s fashions – from ripped jeans and team jerseys to hypercolor tops and zebra pants, further adorned by slap bracelets, oversized sunglasses and baseball caps. They relived their childhood memories while moving to hits from the Backstreet Boys, Pearl Jam, and other ‘90s groups, spun by Einstein’s own master deejay, John Schmidt.
Homecoming dance is a recent tradition at Einstein, begun by Joan Junger and her team in student activities. This year, in addition to a good time, the dance offered an opportunity to help with a good deed. In the days leading up to the dance Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines, causing tremendous devastation. Student organizers decided that the dance would also serve as a fundraiser for contributions to the relief effort in the Philippines. More than $150 was raised.
In keeping with homecoming spirit, votes were taken to elect: Freshman Princess (Dordaneh Sugano) and Freshman Prince (Travis Howlette); Homecoming Queen (Diana Nguyen) and Homecoming King (Ari Gartenberg); first-year MVPS (Keneta McKellar, Jessica Faiz, and Monica Zell); and second-year MVPs (Melissa “Missy” Lau and Sophia “Yoshi” Shapiro). A night of fun was had by all.
