Publishing papers is central to the research that goes on at any institution. Often, though, there are questions that can arise for which answers aren't readily available or understood. For example, what is the new NIH public access policy? How does it affect submissions to PubMed Central? How does one comply with the policy's requirements? What are scholarly metrics? How can they impact a researcher's publications?
Answers to these questions have been part of the discussion at the series of "Coffee Talks" offered by staff of the D. Samuel Gottesman Library. Through these monthly offerings the librarians aim to encourage "face time" with library users, while introducing them to the myriad resources of the library and its staff.
At a recent Coffee Talk, the discussion focused on the NIH public access policy for submitting to PubMed Central. Library staff offered practical advice for navigating the somewhat complicated steps of compliance.
Another Coffee Talk featured explanations of scholarly metrics, such as impact factors, H indexes, and citation reports, which are used to assign value to journals, journal articles, authors and institutions. The discussion also covered how to interpret these metrics.
"Coffee Talks are designed to provide opportunities for addressing specific questions related to the work carried out by students, postdocs, faculty and staff," said Aurelia Minuti, head of reference & educational services at the D. Samuel Gottesman Library. "The topics covered also allow us to promote use of the tools and services available at the library that may otherwise remain untapped."
Upcoming Coffee Talks will focus on the NIH Public Access Policy: How to Comply (Tuesday, September 24) and how to approach writing a systematic review (Tuesday, October 22), where library staff will present detailed advice and demonstrate tools for aiding the extensive research and writing process.
Coffee Talks take place from 9 to 10 a.m. on the last Tuesday of each month. Each talk features a brief presentation by library staff, a Q&A session and discussion, along with bagels and coffee.
"Taking advantage of these offerings can expand one’s knowledge of our services and extensive collection of library resources, while also getting to know members of our staff," said Ms. Minuti.
