Tuesday, April 23, 2013 marked the second annual World Book Night in the United States and at Einstein. As part of the event, tens of thousands of volunteer "givers" across the country distribute half a million books to individuals in their communities who are infrequent readers or do not read at all. Among those giving the gift of reading were participants in the Adult Literacy Program at Einstein's Fisher Landau Center for the Treatment of Learning Disabilities.
Having been the beneficiaries of a World Book Night 2012 donation made by Karen Gardner, associate director of internal and web communications, the adults decided to pay it forward in 2013. They selected children in the School Age Unit, which is a clinical service of Einstein's Children's Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center (CERC), to receive copies of Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth.
Five members of the Adult Literacy Program, which also is part of CERC, distributed the novel illustrated by Jules Feiffer to 19 eager recipients. Another copy was donated to the program's library.
Once again, Ms. Gardner participated in the event, providing each adult with their own copy of The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros. Additional copies will be given to other participants in the program who were unable to attend the event.
"One of the goals of the Adult Literacy Program is to encourage our adults to become more active members in society," said Dr. Jaman Welch, co-director of the Adult Literacy Program. "World Book Night provides such an opportunity. The adults truly appreciated having the chance to share the gift of reading with the children and the children enjoyed sharing their favorite stories with the adults."
