On February 28, 2013, in celebration of International Rare Disease Day, a special art exhibit called "Rare People with Unique Talents on an Almost Rare Day" was held in the Van Etten lobby.
The exhibited works, arranged on the walls throughout the cavernous lobby, showcased dozens of artistic pieces created by children and adults who participate in various programs at both Einstein’s Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center (CERC) and other area organizations that serve people with developmental disabilities. The artwork represented many media forms, including paintings, drawings, sculpture, paper maché, and computer-generated pieces.
"By exhibiting the artistic talent of these individuals, we hope to convey their creativity and capability, so that people can see beyond their diseases and disabilities," offered Dr. Robert Marion, director of CERC, during opening remarks at the event. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness and appreciation for these unique individuals and to encourage research and programming that will enhance the lives of patients and their families.
During the remarks, those in attendance also heard from several of the artists, who described the works they had done. There also was a table with creative activities for children and anyone else who wanted to try their hand at making a fun creation.
The sponsors of this "rare" event included CERC, the Rose F. Kennedy University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center, the Association for the Help of Retarded Children NYC, and the Institutes of Applied Human Dynamics.
