On Monday, March 25, 2013, the B.O.L.D. crochet group paid a visit to the Montefiore Medical Park oncology infusion unit, located at 1695 Eastchester Road, where they made a special delivery of hand-crocheted lap quilts to cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. In addition to the adult blankets, the group members also gave out baby blankets, hat and scarf sets, scarf and fingerless glove sets and flower-shaped potholders.
"It's not uncommon for patients undergoing chemotherapy to feel anxious, alone, sleepy and cold over the course of the several hours each treatment can take, so the quilts offer comfort in many ways," noted Dr. Alyson Moadel, director of Einstein's Psychosocial Oncology Program, which runs the Bronx Oncology Living Daily Program, more commonly known as B.O.L.D.
Most of the crochet group members have been through chemo themselves and, as cancer survivors or loved ones of a survivor, take part in the group to help reduce stress and for mutual support.
The group also offers their creations as raffle items or for sale to help B.O.L.D. with its annual fundraising efforts as participants in – and the Bronx's only fundraising beneficiary of – the EIF-Revlon Run/Walk. They've recently expanded their repertoire of crocheted items to include hats, scarves, gloves and bookmarks.
The group's community service efforts have benefited countless patients throughout the Bronx, with visits to the neonatal and maternity units at Weiler Hospital and Jacobi Medical Center to distribute baby blankets, as well as to Weiler's chemo unit and Jacobi's rehab unit to distribute lap quilts to patients. More recently, they worked with the 49th Precinct Community Council to provide blankets and quilts to families in need during the holiday season.
In addition, several members are hard at work on crochet dolls that they plan to give out to patients at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore. And they plan to give bookmarks to children in local Bronx schools.
