Working It Out to Reduce Stress

With courses, clinics, manuscripts and meetings, the demands of medical and graduate school can be unrelenting. Even so, many students at Einstein achieve balance in their busy lives by playing as hard as they work. While some find sanctuary on park trails or in the Falk Recreation Center, others find haven at a nearby rock-climbing gym. Wherever and however they stay active, students agree that a physical outlet is integral to their success.

A number of students have turned their love for running into an opportunity for charitable giving. For example, graduate student Kendra Bolt forged a partnership between the Project AWARE Foundation and the New York Road Runners to become captain of an annual team in the ING New York City Marathon. Funds raised by the team help protect fragile shark populations and rehabilitate our oceans. Meanwhile, Penny Ruiz focuses her fundraising efforts on aiding Back on My Feet, an organization that aims to build confidence, strength and independence among individuals in underserved populations. Both women admit that getting out the door can be tough, but getting through a week without de-stressing on a run is even tougher.

For others, like medical student Daniel Schaerer and Ph.D. student Oren Mayer, fitness is a serious matter. The weight of medical school responsibilities has nothing on the barbells Mr. Schaerer can be found lifting. A passion for Crossfit inspired him to offer a Sunday morning Functional Fitness Class that he leads at the Falk Recreation Center, where participants develop strength for the everyday.

Regardless of the day, it's not unusual to see Mr. Mayer leading classmates through fun, thorough and effective workouts, as well. "After I burn off all that energy, my mind wants to work to keep up with how hard I'm pushing everything else," said Mr. Mayer. "A healthy body fosters a healthy mind, and a healthy mind keeps the body going."

For still others, serenity is a goal. Earlier this year, medical student Chelsea McGuire helped classmates approach their studies from a centered state of mind by introducing an outdoor group yoga practice. "As the responsibilities increase and time is scheduled tighter and tighter, it can be easy to forget to take care of yourself," said Ms. McGuire.

At Einstein, students are reminded that in order to succeed, they have to feel their best. "I think it's important for everyone to find that one thing that is healing for them," said Ms. McGuire. "I'm very grateful to have found what works for me."
