On July 1, 2013, Einstein welcomed a delegation of 24 faculty members from Southern Medical University (SMU), located in Guangzhou, China. The visit offered an opportunity for faculty from both institutions to share information about how each conducts its research and medical education.
To kick off the two-hour meeting, Dr. Hui (Herb) Sun, associate professor of radiation oncology and of orthopaedic surgery, welcomed the College of Medicine’s visitors as they congregated with Einstein faculty members in the Price Center/Block Pavilion. Dr. Sun had organized the event in conjunction with Barbara Levy, assistant dean for academic affairs.
Dr. Victor Schuster, professor and chair of medicine, and the Ted and Florence Baumritter Chair of Medicine, then described the history of Einstein, its close relationship with its University Hospital Montefiore Medical Center and how medical research and educational programs are funded. He explained about the role of the federal government and fundraising and philanthropy in supporting the institution’s research and education goals.
Christian Lin, project official of the international affairs office at SMU, then reciprocated with a presentation about the university and its operations, as well as its faculty’s desire to connect with institutions like Einstein in the United States and worldwide.
"Our visitors expressed a strong desire to establish collaborations with Einstein," noted Dr. Sun. "They are interested in establishing programs that could allow for the exchange of scholars; training for research and clinical fellows, and for students; and research projects, such as clinical trials."
Other members of the Einstein faculty who addressed the visitors from SMU included Drs. Neil Cobelli, professor and chair of orthopaedic surgery; Stephen Baum, senior associate dean for students and professor of medicine and of microbiology & immunology; and John Harb, assistant dean of scientific operations and director of the office of biotechnology.
Prior to visiting Einstein, the Chinese delegation attended an education management training program at George Mason University. They also visited Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland and the National Institutes of Health.
