The long term goal of this research program is to understand the molecular mechanisms of cell growth and differentiation, and their relationships to human disease. We focus on elucidating the interplays between transcription factors and signaling pathways. We ask how does extracellular stimuli communicate with intracellular effectors, and eventually modulate cellular responses in normal and diseased states.
We use transcription factor NFAT as a pivotal point in the research program because of their expression in numerous tissues, and their intricate regulation by protein kinases and phosphatases. In addition, NFAT is only found in vertebrates, suggesting its unique role in higher eukaryotes. The major question of this research program is : What is the regulation and function of NFAT ? This laboratory utilizes molecular biology, biochemistry, and transgenic animals to investigate the physiological functions and regulations of transcription factor NFAT.
