Professional Interests

Dr. Marcelo E Bigal was born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1969. He graduated in Medicine and completed his residency in neurology at the College of Medicine at the University of São Paulo, in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. After graduation, he obtained a degree in Master in Science (1999) and a Ph.D in Neurosciences (2001) in the University of São Paulo. In 2001, he was granted by the International Headache Society with the Second International Headache Society Fellowship, and came to the United States where he studied one year with Drs. Alan M. Rapoport, Fred D. Sheftell and Stewart J. Tepper, from the New England Center for Headache, in Stamford, CT. In 2002 he joined the Department of Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, invited by Dr. Richard B. Lipton. Since 2002, Dr Bigal is completely devoted to the study of the headaches. Dr Bigal is currently the Co-Director of the Scientific Annual Meeting of the American Headache Society, as well as Chairman of the Electronics Committee and of the Classification Committee of the American Headache Society. He is also the Chairman of the Acute Treatment Section of the Headache Standard Quality Committee of the American Academy of Neurology, and Co-Director of the 2007 Annual Meeting of the International Headache Society. Dr. Bigal most important awards include: The American Academy of Neurology Harold-Wolff John Graham Award for outstanding achievements in headache/pain research, granted during the Annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in 2005; The American Headache Society 2005 Kapplan award for best research in chronic daily headache; The American Headache Society 2004 Kapplan award for best research in chronic daily headache; The American Headache Society Preventive Research Award of 2004. Dr Bigal has published around 130 articles in indexed journal, edited 3 books, as well as authored or co-authored around 20 book chapters. He is also the director of research of the Montefiore Headache Center. The Montefiore Headache Center is internationally recognized for its leadership in the diagnosis, classification and treatment of headache disorders.
