Dr. Jeffrey Gonzalez's research focuses on identifying factors associated with treatment nonadherence in and developing interventions to improve treatment adherence among patients with chronic illness, particularly diabetes and HIV/AIDS. His research has recently focused on the link between depression and distress and diabetes treatment nonaderence as a potential pathway for understanding the negative effects of depression on diabetes outcomes.
Dr. Gonzalez has published data showing that symptoms of depression are associated with worse diabetes self-care, even at levels of depressive symptom severity that fall below clinical levels. He recently published a meta-analysis of 47 independent samples showing that the relationship between symptoms of depression and diabetes treatment nonadherence is consistent across patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and across a full range of self-care behaviors.
Before coming to Einstein, Dr. Gonzalez was Co-PI of an NIMH-funded R01 to test the efficacy of a cognitive behavioral therapy intervention to improve treatment adherence and treat depression among type 2 patients with clinical depression. He remains involved in this ongoing trial and is currently conducting pilot work to adapt this approach for type 1 and type 2 patients who have distress that does not meet diagnostic thresholds for clinical depression.
Dr. Gonzalez collaborates on an NIDDK-funded trial examining the efficacy of a telephone-delivered intervention to improve treatment adherence in type 2 diabetes patients from the South Bronx with Dr. Elizabeth Walker. He also maintains an ongoing collaboration on a series of studies that have examined predictors of foot care, depression, and quality of life in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
