Troubleshooting Opening, Viewing, or Printing Adobe Acrobat PDF Files

Multiple Versions of Adobe Acrobat or Reader

Having multiple versions of Adobe Reader installed on the same system can cause plug-in conflicts.

Microsoft Internet Explorer (Windows)

Google Chrome Browser (Windows / Mac OS)

  • Google Chrome has a built-in PDF viewer enabled by default, which opens the file directly in your browser window. To disable the built-in viewer, enter chrome://settings/content in the address bar and Scroll down to PDF Documents. Enable "Open PDFs using a different application."

Mozilla Firefox Browser

  • Windows
    • Mozilla Firefox has a built-in PDF viewer. To disable the built-in viewer click the menu button and choose ‘Options’. Select the ‘Applications’ panel and find ‘Portable Document Format (PDF)’ and click on it to select it. Click on the drop-down arrow in the ‘Action’ column and select ‘Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)’ or ‘Use Adobe Acrobat (default)’. Restart Firefox.

  • Mac OS
    • Select Mozilla Firefox. Choose Preferences>Applications. Find ‘Portable Document Format (PDF)’ and click on it to select it. Click on the drop-down arrow in the ‘Action” column and select ‘Use Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in’.

Other Solutions

  • Disable Display PDF in Browser and Fast Web View
    • Close all browsers. Open Adobe Reader. Choose Edit>Preferences>Internet. In the ‘Web Browser Options’ section, uncheck ‘Display PDF in browser’ and uncheck ‘Allow Fast Web View’.  Click ‘OK’ to confirm the change.
     
  • Download and Install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Mobile Devices

Mobile devices do not support XFA-based PDF forms. XFA-based PDF forms allow users to fill-in and save PDF forms locally. Please use your desktop/laptop to download the file directly to your local drive and open the file using Adobe Reader.
