Information for Participants

The 2017 SURP Program will start on Monday, June 5 and end on Thursday, July 27. Housing move-in dates are June 2-June 4 and the move-out date is July 28.

Participant Checklist (complete prior to starting the program)

SURP participants need to fulfill the following requirements prior to the starting the program: Health Clearance, HR Onboarding, and complete W-9. Detailed descriptions about these requirements are listed below.

Complete Medical Forms

Health clearance forms are sent by email. The health clearance forms must be completed prior to the start of the program. Please note: you will be unable to begin the program unless the forms are complete. The completed forms must be returned directly to the Einstein Occupational Heath Office no later than May 5, 2017.

Onboarding

The Einstein Human Resources Department will email you information regarding the program onboarding process. In order for you to successfully join the program you will need to complete the onboarding process through Human Resources, which will include:

  • Completion of student onboarding application
  • Background screening including criminal and SS Trace
  • Completion of online Preventing Workplace Harassment Training Course

Complete W-9 Form

For SURP participants receiving a stipend or travel reimbursement: the college requires that you complete a W-9 form. The completed W-9 form can be sent by email (surp@einstein.yu.edu) or by postal mail.

 

Housing

As a SURP student you will have the privilege of living in the Einstein Residence Complex in shared furnished apartments at no cost to you for the duration of the program. This apartment complex houses all our current medical and graduate students. We know that you will respect this property, and leave the apartment in the same condition in which you found it. In addition, you will have free access to the Falk Recreation Facility located on the Residence Complex grounds.

We will make the necessary arrangements for housing. All summer students will live in the Eastchester Road Student Residence Complex, located directly across the street from the research buildings. You will receive room assignments upon arrival.

Move-In

Please plan to move in anytime between Friday, June 2 - Sunday, June 4. Keys will be left in an envelope (with your name) at the Security Desk in 1935 Eastchester Road, Bronx, New York 10461.

What to Bring with You

We recommend that you bring: a blanket and set of sheets (twin), pillow and pillow cases, towels, shower curtain with hanging rings, personal soap, a place setting of dishes and flat-ware,perhaps a small saucepan, and any other items you feel are necessary, as the apartments will be furnished sparingly (apartments are air conditioned). All apartments have kitchens so that you may prepare meals (no meal plan available). If you are bringing your personal computer, internet access is available. You will receive more information about internet access at orientation.

Move-Out

SURP students must arrange to move out promptly on Friday, July 28 (no later than 5:00 pm). Therefore Thursday, July 27 will be the last night in student housing.

 

Orientation

Orientation begins promptly at 9:00am on Monday, June 5 in the Forchheimer- 5th Floor Lecture Hall. Orientation is designed to acclimate you to the Einstein campus, of which you will be a part for the summer. During orientation you will:

  • Meet with the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs in the Biomedical Sciences to review the program training goals for the summer
  • Hear about our broadly diverse campus from the Assistant Dean for Diversity Enhancement
  • Learn about leading-edge research of Einstein's Principal Investigators & graduate students
  • Participate in training activities, which will allow you to fully participate in a research laboratory

On orientation day continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. After lunch, SURP students will go to their assigned laboratory. You will receive further information about your mentor and laboratory at orientation.

 

Program Activities

During your stay at Einstein, you are considered a member of the Einstein student body.You will receive a full program schedule at orientation. Students are required to attend the full 8 weeks and participate full time in the entire program, which includes full-time laboratory research, attendance at all weekly seminars, all bi-weekly discussion groups, and the poster session.

We strongly encourage you to participate in all social activities on campus.

 

Einstein Campus and Community

The Albert Einstein College of Medicine is situated in a residential community consisting of one and two family homes.

A shopping area with post office, banks, supermarkets, small shops, restaurants, etc. is within walking distance. There is also an Einstein cafeteria on campus as well as local coffee and pizza shops within walking distance.

To receive mail you should use the Graduate Office address as a mailing address during the summer. Please use the following format to ensure that your mail reaches our office.

Transportation

Manhattan is easily accessible from the Einstein Campus via:

  • The 2 or 5 train at East 180 ST
  • The 6 train at Westchester Square
  • The BxM10 express bus at Morris Park Avenue

Health Services

Should you need to see a doctor while you are at Einstein, Health Services will be available for summer participants at a private practice group at your expense. Depending on your current health insurance, services may be billed directly to you or you may need to charge them to a credit card (Master Card or Visa). Please be sure to carry your health insurance I.D. card while you are participating in our program.
