MSTP Program Features

In addition to coursework and laboratory research, Einstein MSTP students participate in a variety of activities that broaden the multidisciplinary nature of the program, add depth to their thesis work, allow for hands-on patient care, and encourage them to publish their work while still in school. Activities include:

  • Continuity Clinics. To keep in touch with medicine and the clinical environment while conducting their Ph.D. research, MSTP students can gain clinical experience through weekly Continuity Clinics at nearby hospitals. Students practice patient presentation, history-taking, physical examination, and primary care. This hands-on experience reinforces knowledge acquired in the first two years of the medical-school curriculum.
  • Clinical Pathology Conferences. Yet another chance for MSTP students to stay connected with medicine while pursuing their research interests. Participants are given a clinical case and the associated pathobiology to review. Later in a small-group setting, students meet with an attending physician to discuss the case, techniques of differential diagnosis, the presentation and management of the patient, and the associated pathology.
  • Speakers. Academic departments frequently host guest speakers from other hospitals and research centers. In addition, a variety of MSTP-specific topics are frequently offered with faculty and alumni speakers. Go to the calendar of events online for a list of current offerings.
  • Friday Luncheon Series. The Directors in the MSTP Graduate Office hold informal weekly lunch meetings, giving students a chance to not only unwind and socialize but also to discuss first-year questions and challenges.
  • The Einstein Quarterly. Founded in 1984, this student-edited journal serves as an intellectual forum for the medical and scientific community. Contributors include students, fellows, residents, faculty, and alumni from both the medical school and the Ph.D. and MSTP graduate programs.
