Other Research Areas

Within the neuropathology area of research, investigators in the department are working to understand the mechanisms involved in the development of several pathological processes that affect the central nervous system (CNS). The focus of this research involves basic studies on the molecular mechanisms that regulate the development of the CNS, the identification of the mechanisms important for the development of Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis (MS) and the study of the processes that regulate inflammation in the CNS, with a particular focus on the etiopathogenesis of MS and HIV-induced neuronal damage. Understanding how these processes are regulated and how they can be modified should lead to potential therapeutic approaches to facilitate CNS repair and regeneration.
