Study Shows How Aging Impairs Immune Response

Tuesday, July 31, 2012

A study by Laura Santambrogio, MD, PhD, associate professor of pathology and of microbiology and immunology at Einstein, on how aging impairs the immune response was recently published in the journal Cell Reports. She was among the Einstein researchers to uncover one of the mechanisms by which aging may compromise the ability of the immune system to fight infections and respond to vaccines. The study, conducted in aging mice, shows that administering antioxidants may help reverse this loss of immune function. The study was featured on the Einstein web site and received media coverage. http://tinyurl.com/cxpntcc

Unique opportunities abound in Clinical and Experimental Pathology at the Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Our mission is to deliver the highest quality of medical care through the use of state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures and the translation of new knowledge into the practice of Pathology.

The Department of Pathology is a leader in medical, resident and graduate education. The department is home to approximately 20 residents, 8 clinical fellows, 15 postdoctoral scholars, and 15 graduate students from various Ph.D. programs.  Our faculty members receive substantial federal funding to conduct basic, translational, and clinical research in the mechanisms of disease. Our major programs include: Genomics and Cancer Biology, Immunopathology, Infectious Disease and Neuropathology.

Montefiore is an integrated medical system and was the best performing Pioneer ACO in 2012. Pathology clinical services are provided using a service line model. We performed over 11 million tests in 2013, providing services to diverse settings throughout the Bronx and lower Westchester County, including acute care academic medical centers, large medical groups, schools, shelters, nursing homes, hospices, emergency departments and solo practitioners.
