Employment Placement Resources 

The Residency Training Program has been very successful in job and position placement. A bulletin board with the most up-to-date positions available is prominently displayed centrally by the residency office and updated regularly. The program receives multiple queries from institutions throughout the United States for our graduates.

During the final year of residency, a candidate's resume and personal statement is closely scrutinized to increase his or her marketability. The Residency Review Committee carefully reviews the resident's rotations to assess individual strengths and actively offers suggestions for enhancing job prospects.

Placement has been achieved for all residents graduating the program. Recently, residents have gone on to positions at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Research Institute and Hospital, NYC OCME - Medical Examiner, our own competitive Fellowships (one of only 18 programs with four or more fellowships), MD Anderson Cancer Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, Yale, Harvard, Washington University, Physicians and Surgeons Medical Center of Columbia University, New York University, Mount Sinai, as well as to faculty and private practice positions throughout the United States.

All Graduates typically pass Boards.

 

Career Trends in Pathology 

Traditionally, careers in pathology filled the needs of academic and community hospital practices. Trends in the market place and advances in the biomedical sciences, however, have altered the career landscape.

Now, incorporated groups of pathologists, responsible for multihospital coverage, are replacing traditional hospital-based community practices. Large commercial laboratories process and diagnose out-patient material obtained on a regional, even national, basis.

In the academic setting, the pathologist may be a clinician-educator or a physician-scientist. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the physician-scientist participates in and supervises a research laboratory supported by extramural funding. The focus of the clinician-educator is on subspecialty diagnostic expertise; clinical and collaborative research; and the education of students, residents, fellows, and clinicians.

Regardless of the setting, all careers in pathology today require fiscal responsibility and management skills. Recognizing these trends, the Pathology Residency Program at Einstein/Montefiore offers structured flexibility in pursuing one of these career tracks and stresses the acquisition of both diagnostic and management skills.
