The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health

Global Women's Health Programs

The Division of Family Planning and Global Women’s Health in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center began its global health initiatives in 2009 with the generous support of the Einstein Global Health Center. We are grateful for their continuing support as our work has expanded. We are currently working in sub-Saharan Africa to improve women’s access to quality reproductive healthcare services. We believe that the key to producing sustainable improvements in women’s healthcare in this region begins with recognizing the complex nature of the problems that exist and having a multi-faceted approach to our work. Therefore, our mission is to empower healthcare providers in these countries to provide high-quality, evidence-based medical services to women and girls through education, clinical, and research capacity building activities. All of these efforts are ultimately aimed at creating a highly skilled workforce at every level of the healthcare and medical education infrastructure. In addition, as an academic institution, the ever-increasing interest of US medical students and residents in global women’s health is further fostered through education and field exposure with our faculty.

Family Planning

Overview

Nearly half of all pregnancies are unintended around the world and in the United States each year; improved access to reproductive health care services is one way to address this important public health issue. The Family Planning Division offers comprehensive clinical services in a caring, supportive environment designed to meet the needs of our diverse population. Our division is home to a Kenneth J. Ryan Residency Training Program in Family Planning, the foundation for resident and medical student family planning education in our department, as well as a Fellowship in Family Planning that provides advanced level training. Clinical research efforts in family planning are focused both locally and internationally.
