As part of its mission to advance routine HIV testing, the Montefiore AIDS Center has posted an HIV tester/counselor at the Weiler Division. This tester serves the emergency department and the inpatient units, Monday through Friday.
In the Emergency Department, the HIV tester/counselor approaches patients, obtains their consent, and administers rapid HIV tests. In the inpatient units, the AIDS Center has opened up the ability for hospital staff to order HIV counseling and testing through CareCast, a system already in place at the Moses Division. Once the tester responds to these orders and obtains patients' consent, blood is drawn and processed for standard HIV testing.
"We are able to offer this service at Weiler through a new research grant intended to enhance HIV testing and connect newly identified HIV-positive individuals to care. The grant will fund this project for about two years," said Dr. Barry Zingman, Director of the AIDS Clinic. "While this effort will not in itself fulfill the New York State Department of Health's new requirement to offer HIV testing to all eligible Emergency Department and admitted patients, other efforts are underway to organize and implement that plan. Our new Weiler service is a beginning, and will be part of that overall plan."
This new service is a result of the effort and cooperation of Drs. Tylis Chang and Joe Braverman, Michael Head, Sean Durant, Selma Torres, and Daisy Rodriguez in the AIDS Center.
