Jason Adelman, MD, MSJason Adelman, MD, MS, (Hospital Medicine), Montefiore's Patient Safety Officer, has been appointed to a National Quality Forum (NQF) committee in recognition of his and Montefiore's expertise in patient safety.
In the United States, medical errors and unsafe care kill tens of thousands of people each year (qualityforum.org). The committee, Patient Safety Measures: Complications Endorsement Maintenance Project, will review measures of high-volume complications such as pressure ulcers, falls, venous thromboembolism, healthcare-associated infections, as well as safe discharge, avoidance of readmission, and medication safety. Many of these measures underlie the publically reported data and value-based purchasing measures used to evaluate the performance of healthcare institutions. This committee will also review the NQF-endorsed Serious Reportable Events, which serve as the foundation for many state reporting systems, including New York.
NQF is a nonprofit organization that works to improve healthcare by building consensus on national priorities and goals for performance improvement; endorsing national consensus standards for measuring and publicly reporting on performance; and promoting the attainment of national goals through education and outreach programs.
