Silbiger to Assume New Leadership Roles

Image: Sharon Silbiger, MD
After serving as program director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Montefiore for the past eight years, Dr. Sharon Silbiger (Nephrology) will be moving to a new position July 1, 2009.

As director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, Dr. Silbiger has coordinated the annual Resident & Fellow Research Symposium; overseen an increase in the size of the program; recruited a number of program administrators, firm leaders, and assistant firm leaders; and orchestrated the ACGME-mandated centralization of the fellowship training programs under the house staff Program Director, among many other contributions.

Dr. Silbiger has been recruited to succeed Dr. Shirley Levine as the Associate Chair of Undergraduate Medical Education. In this capacity, Silbiger is a highly regarded educator, as evidenced by her having received the Attending Teacher of the Year Award (1992) and induction into the Leo M. Davidoff Society (2000).

In addition, Dr. Silbiger will become the Moses Site Director for the Division of Nephrology. She is an internationally recognized nephrologist who is known for her work (along with Dr. Joel Neugarten) on the influence of gender on the progression of renal disease. She will focus initially on additional outpatient dialysis facilities, improvement in billing, and enhancement of home therapies.

A national search for Silbiger's successor as the house staff Program Director has commenced.
