Shirley Levine, MD (Hematology) will retire from her position as Associate Chair for Undergraduate Education June 30th, 2009.
Dr. Levine joined Einstein's faculty in 1993 as Professor of Hematology and two years later assumed the position as Associate Chair for Undergraduate Education. As expected from her many preceding teaching awards at the University of Texas San Antonio and other institutions, she quickly established herself as a consummate educator. She was elected to the Leo M. Davidoff Society by the medical school Class of 1996 for excellence in teaching; was named Attending of the Year by the Montefiore Medicine residents in 1998; and was awarded the Harry H. Gordon Award for Outstanding Clinical Teaching in 2000. Dr. Levine is "Best of the Boards," having been selected as best Hematology lecturer among nine regional ACP ABIM Review Courses in 1995, 1996, and 1998.
As Associate Chair, Dr. Levine has directed Internal Medicine education for Einstein's 3rd- and 4th-year students. She has also been the director of Einstein's Hematology Course, a position that will be taken over by Larry Cytryn. She has been an active member of the Hematology Division, and was instrumental in organizing Einstein's LCME ("Liaison Committee on Medical Education") site visit and re-accreditation.
