The Einstein-Montefiore Immunodiagnostic Laboratory (IDL) performs over 75,000 assays a year including tests for over 25 different autoantibodies.
The IDL is equipped with a polarizing microscope available to rheumatology fellows at all times. It maintains a serum bank on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients for research purposes. The laboratory has recently begun implementing an exciting automated ELISA platform known as Bioplex.
During their second year, rheumatology fellows have the opportunity to spend a minimum of twelve hours over a two-week period in the IDL getting hands-on training in diagnostic immunologic testing under the guidance of the lab supervisor.
The IDL was established in 1969 at Montefiore Medical Center by Dr. Peter Barland and has remained under his direction since.
