Division of Pulmonary Medicine

From the Chief

Welcome!

The Einstein-Montefiore Division of Pulmonary Medicine's missions include:

  1. Exceptional clinical care for all respiratory disease patients
  2. Inspired teaching at all levels through sub-specialization Pulmonary & Critical Care fellows
  3. Clinical and translational research to expand biomedical knowledge of and practice in respiratory diseases

The Division’s long history in each of these endeavors has undergone significant expansion in the last 5-6 years. The ongoing commitment of both Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center to the complimentary integration of clinical, teaching, and research missions has allowed for previous and ongoing recruitment of outstanding clinician-teachers, clinical scholars, and physician-scientists.

  • In particular, the group has actively recruited faculty into interventional pulmonary medicine, pulmonary hypertension, sleep medicine, mycobacterial diseases, early lung cancer detection, and other newly emerging fields.
  • Our Sleep Medicine laboratory has expanded into state-of-art facilities.
  • Our Pulmonary Function laboratory has expanded on both the east and west campuses.
  • We have helped found the Montefiore Asthma Center.
  • We have helped catalyze the Lung Cancer CT screening program.
  • We now attend in the Montefiore medical ICUs.

The Division's long history in each of these endeavors has been undergoing a significant resurrection over the last eight years, with the recommitment of both the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center institutions to complimentary integrated missions, and the ongoing recruitment of outstanding clinician-teachers, clinical scholars, and physician-scientists. In particular, the group has recruited faculty into interventional pulmonary medicine, early lung cancer detection, pulmonary hypertension, sleep medicine, and other newly emerging fields.

Our Division's clinical expertise includes common and rare diseases of the chest, including severe asthma, environmental lung diseases, cough, COPD, sleep medicine, nodule evaluation, interstitial lung disease, sarcoidosis, and more. We regularly integrate with other services in the medical centers, particularly with thoracic surgery, medical and radiation oncology, and transplant medicine. Our refurbished Sleep Medicine laboratory has expanded into Montefiore's Westchester Square campus, and our modern Pulmonary Function laboratories are poised for further expansion into the east campus “Hutch” outpatient tower.

Our teaching program is robust and highly competitive, with approximately four new Pulmonary and Critical Care fellows selected from a pool of over 400 applicants. Our 3-year Pulmonary & Critical Care fellowship program offers an exceptionally diverse range of patient encounters and environments including Montefiore Medical Center (west campus); Weiler Hospital (east campus); Jacobi Medical Center, a large municipal hospital, summing to over 2000 beds, with attendant outpatient and research opportunities. Publications on clinical series routinely emerge from these clinical encounters, and many of our graduates move on to academic medicine positions. The option exists to pursue additional formal clinical research training in clinical research through Einstein's Clinical Research Training Program master's degree program in clinical or translational research.

Our Division's research historically has been physiologically and clinically oriented. Long-time members of our faculty have published seminal papers in hypoxia, cough, environmental lung disease, and sleep medicine, with much of the work ongoing. Currently our research portfolio additionally includes refractory asthma outcomes, lung cancer genome-wide surveys informing risk biomarkers and clinical diagnostics; epigenomics and the machinery of gene regulation;  device testing in interventional pulmonary medicine; tuberculosis  risk factors and diagnostics; and sarcoidosis physiology and genetics. Our academic offices and labs include Einstein's spectacular Price Center for Genomic & Translational Medicine.

Einstein entails strong epidemiologic, clinical, and basic/translational sciences, as well as a top tier medical school. The Montefiore health care system is very large, has an excellent medicine residency program, and is a more integrated health system than most, reaching well into the NY metro and the Hudson Valley communities. It is equipped with a highly electronic interface system; therefore, clinical series are relatively easy to interrogate for hypothesis-generating association pilot studies, and the patient volume exists for rapid accrual for more definitive association studies. Einstein is home to several unique prospective cohorts.

This is a real period of growth in our Division's history. Colleagues, visitors, and most importantly patients are directly benefitting.
