Einstein-Montefiore Nephrology Fellowship at a Glance

History

  • Forty years of continuous fellowship training since 1969, with approximately 157 fellows trained

Hospital and Faculty

  • Two hospitals, Montefiore (Moses) and Weiler, are both administered as Montefiore Medical Center with approximately1,000 total beds 
  • Eighteen full-time faculty members, many with local and national leadership roles in medicine and nephrology

Fellowship

  • Four first-year and four second-year fellows
  • First-year fellows spend six months at each hospital
  • Second-year fellows have two months of transplantation, a smallgroup of chronic outpatients, ESRD patients, outpatient clinic and research projects
  • Night call is every 4th night from home with an attending backup

Transplantation

  • 119 renal transplants in 2008, 114 in 2009
  • Three full time clinical transplant nephrologists and 4 transplant surgeons
  • Active pancreas, liver and heart transplant programs

End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

  • Approximately 550 ESRD patients cared for by full-time faculty
  • Two dialysis units directed by full-time faculty
  • Peritoneal dialysis program and home hemodialysis program

Chronic Kidney Disease Clinic

  • Staffed by a faculty member and interdisciplinary team

Vascular Access Center

  • Staffed by nephrology and interventional radiology faculty

Research

  • Five basic or applied laboratories run by faculty
  • Three faculty members with masters degrees and active clinical and epidemiologic research
  • Multiple National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other research grants totaling approximately $8,850,000
