Professional Interests

Supported initially by an NIH Career Development award, followed by grants from the NIH, FDA and HHMI, Dr. Jacqueline M. Achkar has established a successful translational research program in the field of tuberculosis serology and biomarker discovery which includes multiple ongoing national and international collaborations. Her research is focused on the evaluation of human immune responses to M. tuberculosis in patients at various states of infection towards i) the development of novel diagnostic tests for active TB; and ii) the identification of correlates of protection against TB.

In 2010, Dr. Achkar co-chaired an international symposium on TB diagnostics at University of KwaZulu-Natal and the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for TB and HIV, in Durban, South Africa. In 2011, she co-edited a supplement of the Journal of Infectious Diseases on new developments in TB diagnostics. She has published over 20 papers and has been invited to write several reviews on antibody responses against TB in adults and children. Over the past years, the NIH has invited her to several meetings and workshops to address the complexity of TB biomarker discovery in humans. Her work on TB biomarker discovery has led to two patents thus far. Her more recently expanded work, in collaboration with Drs. Arturo Casadevall and John Chan, investigates also the role of antibodies in the protection against TB, and resulted in several invitations for peer-reviewed book chapters and reviews. In addition to her research activities, Dr. Achkar enjoys being an active Infectious Disease attending physician, teacher, and mentor.

Dr. Achkar is a physician scientist and currently an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Achkar received her Medical Diploma and Doctoral Degree from the Free University of Berlin, Germany, and her Master of Science Degree in Clinical Research Methods from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She completed her Medical Residency and Infectious Disease Fellowship at the New York University School of Medicine, NY, NY, is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, and joined Einstein in 2006.
