Professional Interests

Dr. Melissa Bender joined the faculty in 2012 as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Associate Program Director of the Primary Care/Social Medicine Residency Program at Montefiore. She is board-certified in both internal medicine and infectious disease.

Dr. Bender received an AB magna cum laude in Government from Harvard College, a MD cum laude from Harvard Medical School, and a MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health. She completed her training in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and an infectious disease fellowship at the combined Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women’s Hospital program, and she was Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Through her postgraduate work in the CEPAC-International group at Harvard, she gained experience using decision-analytic, state transition, and cost-effectiveness modeling to evaluate treatment policies for HIV- and HIV/TB-infected patients in resource-limited settings. In 2009, she became an Instructor of Medicine at NYU School of Medicine and a staff attending in the infectious disease division.

Dr. Bender's NIH-funded research has been cited by articles published in JAMA, Science, and by organizations such as Médecins Sans Frontières. She has conducted clinical care and research in a variety of international settings including Bolivia, Mexico, India, and Argentina. Her interests include medical education, global health, HIV, as well as interdisciplinary approaches to improving public policy and health outcomes for people living in impoverished settings.
