Montefiore Launches Program to Help Patients Better Tolerate Chemotherapy
Montefiore’s new Chemotherapy and Biologic Agent Desensitization Program (CBDP) will help patients better tolerate their cancer drugs. Set to formally launch in fall 2017, it is among a handful of programs in the United States that provide chemotherapy and biologic allergy desensitization in an outpatient setting. Led by Melissa Iammatteo and Elina Jerschow, the CBDP will be a joint venture between the Division of Allergy and Immunology’s Drug Allergy and Desensitization Center and the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care Oncology Infusion Center.


A New One-Stop Service Center for Persistent Nasal and Sinus Issues
Montefiore’s new Chronic Sinusitis Center is a “one-stop” service center for people seeking relief for persistent nasal or sinus issues. Launched in March 2016, the combined clinic is a collaboration between the Department of Medicine’s Division of Allergy & Immunology and the Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. Drs.Denisa Ferastraoaru and Elina Jerschow team up with ENT specialists to test the patients.


Managing Asthma with Your Smartphone
Montefiore allergy and immunology specialist Sunit Jariwala, MD, is betting on a smartphone app to help patients manage their asthma in between doctor’s visits. Working with a multi-disciplinary team of asthma specialists, software developers and behavioral scientists, Dr. Jariwala created the ASTHMAEducator mobile app, a data-driven and patient-centered approach to asthma management.
 

Testing for Allergies Localized to the Nose
Nearly 50 percent of people in the United States suffer from allergies; a significant number report having nasal allergies or sinus problems. But for some patients with symptoms of allergic rhinitis – runny nose, nasal congestion – skin tests and blood work turn up negative for allergies. Denisa Ferastraoaru, MD is heading up an initiative to diagnose local allergic rhinitis – a localized nasal allergic response in the absence of systemic atopy characterized by local symptoms (such as nasal congestion, itchy nose and eyes, sneezing) when exposed to the culprit environmental allergen(s).

Works-In-Progress: Grants For Excellence In Medical Education
Dr. Elina Jerschow is the recipient of a Grant for Excellence in Medical Education, and will present her work in progress to fellow faculty members at the annual "Works-In-Progress: Grants For Excellence In Medical Education", Thursday, June 18 in the Price Center.



Division Launches Innovative Food Allergy Center
The newly opened Montefiore Medical Center Food Allergy Centers in Scarsdale and the Bronx offer advanced testing methods and treatment for adults and children who suffer from food allergies.
