Family medicine is a dynamic and intellectually challenging medical specialty which provides integrated, comprehensive and continuous care of patients in the context of their lives, across the entire life cycle, and all disease states with a focus on health and prevention.
We are committed to excellence in medical student education. We provide a wide range of interactive and creative programs through all years of medical school.
Third Year Medical Students
In the Family and Social Medicine Clerkship, Einstein students will learn how to care for patients in the ambulatory setting. They will learn
- to recognize and treat a broad array of common medical problems
- to manage acute and chronic medical conditions
- to foster health promotion and practice preventive medicine
- to form "therapeutic alliances" with patients and to "develop" treatment plans
- to place illness in the context of the whole patient
Students will also step into the role of the family physician out in the community providing outreach and health education. They will also explore elements of the Patient-Centered Medical Home in their clinical setting and didactic sessions.
Fourth Year Medical Students
Our department offers several outstanding electives to both Einstein and visiting fourth year medical students. This is an opportunity to learn advanced skills in urban, underserved Family Medicine. The electives offered by the faculty of the Department of Family and Social Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center and its Family Practice Residency in the Montefiore Residency Program in Social Medicine are denoted “(Montefiore)” on our electives page.
