FACULTY LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIP
In 2001 the Albert Einstein College of Medicine became the recipient of the first Hispanic Center of Excellence (HCOE) in New York State with a federal grant from the Division of Health Professions Diversity and Development and in 2009 became the only HCOE to be funded under President Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The HCOE objectives include the promotion of research in Hispanic health and academic success for junior faculty interested in Hispanic health, especially members of under-represented minority groups. Since its inception two cohorts have completed the two-year fellowship in June 2004 and 2005; current Leadership Fellows will finish in 2011.
The Einstein Hispanic Center of Excellence is proud again to call for applications to the HCOE Faculty Leadership Development Fellowship. The HCOE will sponsor two Leadership Development Fellows for a period of two years. The intent of the Leadership Fellowship is to assist junior faculty with needed skills for leadership, success in their academic area, and career advancement and to provide junior faculty with some protected time, free of clinical and teaching responsibilities.
Applicants are strongly encouraged from underrepresented minorities, faculty with demonstrated interest in Hispanic and minority health, faculty who have identified a scholarly educational or teaching project or wish to conduct clinical and/or translational research, and faculty who seek leadership roles in academic medicine.
Eligibility Criteria: Each Applicant must have the following:
- A clinical, educational, and/or research doctoral degree (i.e., MD, DDS, DO, EdD, PhD, PharmD, or PsyD);
- A faculty appointment at Einstein or affiliates during the fellowship; and
- A detailed written commitment of support from their Department Chair or Division Chief.
Each Leadership Development Fellow will receive funding over a two-year period to support their scholarly efforts to develop their area of interest in Hispanic and Minority Health; this includes tuition support for a Masters level program (e.g., CRTP, MPH, etc.) or "other" individualized program proposed by the applicant for consideration by the Selection Committee. In the latter instance applicants will need to provide sufficient rationale and detail for their proposed program in their application for the Selection Committee to make an informed judgment. Departments of Leadership Fellows will receive $45,000 per year in total salary and fringe benefit support to assure adequate time to complete program requirements. Leadership Faculty Fellows are required to devote adequate time to the development of their academic skills, to meet regularly with their mentors, and present at HCOE Forums and will be invited to all HCOE faculty development workshops.
