As a trained clinical psychologist, Dr. Chhabra has been involved in clinical work and research related to HIV/AIDS with specific focus on education, prevention, health promotion and quality of life issues for people living with HIV/AIDS. Utilizing the principles of Community Based Participatory Research orientation (CBPR), she has been involved in designing and implementing international health education and health promotion programs in India. For the past seven years, Dr. Chhabra has been working with over 100 high schools in various states of India on designing and implementing Alcohol & HIV prevention and cardiovascular health promotion programs for adolescents.



Dr. Chhabra is the Principal Investigator on a the School-based Teenage Education Program (STEPs) in India, including a pilot project focused on HIV prevention completed in Mumbai, results displayed in Knowledge, Beliefs, Self Efficacy, Confidence in Skills and Attitudes – Peer Pressure measurements. Dr. Chhabra also had a second project focused on alcohol abuse and HIV/AIDS in schools in India (completed in 100 schools in major cities like Mumbai, Bangalore and Shimla). Curent sites for STEP implementation include New Delhi, as well as extending the program to other populations (street children, high school dropouts, children of prostitutes, etc.). Dr. Chhabra was a recent recipient of a MAC AIDS Fund grant to strengthen and broaden her behavioral research STEPs program in multiple locations (States of Karnataka, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh) in India.
