A smartphone-based teledermatology and dermatopathology consult service with Kisoro, Uganda and Lago Atitllan, Guatemala
Teledermatology is dermatology consultation by proxy using interactive communication technologies. We have established an IRB-approved teledermatology consult service with Kisoro District Hospital in rural Uganda and the Mayan Medical Aid clinics in Lago Atitlan, Guatemala, both serving resource limited and geographically isolated communities.
Case histories and photographs are transmitted onto an encrypted website by trained medical students in the field through a ClickMedix smartphone application. Dermatology residents and attendings of the Unified Division of Dermatology are automatically notified when a consult is requested. We are evaluating the value of this model in terms of cost-effectiveness, feasibility, and effect on management of patients in resource poor areas.
