BOLD Healthy Living 12-week Program

The Bronx Oncology Living Daily (BOLD) Healthy Living Program is the first known lifestyle intervention program specifically designed to address diabetes risk reduction in a predominantly African American and Latino population of cancer survivors. The lifestyle intervention consists of one sixty-minute group exercise class plus one sixty- to ninety-minute group nutrition class per week for the duration of a four- or twelve-week intervention led by a licensed personal trainer and registered dietician. The nutrition education curriculum is made available in English and Spanish and incorporates educational handouts and presentations. Instructors use social-ecological modeling and integrated cognitive behavioral and motivational strategies to reduce barriers to lifestyle changes while promoting sustainability. Strategies include weekly food and exercise journaling, goal setting, a buddy system, and family and community engagement.

Since the program’s inception in March 2011, the BOLD Healthy Living Program has enrolled 103 cancer survivors and co-survivors to the program. Classes have been held at various, diverse geographical sites in the Bronx including the Montefiore-Einstein Center for Cancer Care, Lincoln Medical Center, Goodwill Baptist Church, and the American Cancer Society-Bronx Division.

Funding for this program was made possible through the generosity of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine's Communities IMPACT Diabetes Center Legacy Grant.
