The Spirit of Achievement Awards Luncheon is the flagship fundraiser sponsored by the Women’s Division of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Held annually in New York City, the event raises money to support medical research and education programs at Einstein by honoring outstanding individuals in fields such as philanthropy, the arts, business, government and journalism.

Started in 1954 as part of the initial campaign to raise funds to launch the new medical college, the Spirit of Achievement Luncheon was the first event of its kind.

The list of names associated with the Spirit Luncheon is dazzling. Honorees have included Marlene Dietrich, Margaret Mead, Eleanor Roosevelt, Helen Hayes, Meryl Streep, Katie Couric, Dana Reeve, Candace Bushnell, Barbara Walters, Alma Powell, and Sharon Stone, to name a few. Spirit of Achievement 2015 Highlights

The Einstein Women’s Division hosted its 61st annual Spirit of Achievement Luncheon on May 19 at the Rainbow Room. Our honorees were actress Candice Bergen, opera star Renée Fleming and Einstein-Montefiore pediatric heart specialists Drs. Daphne Hsu and Robert Pass. The event benefited research by leading scientists at the Albert Einstein Cancer Center focusing on ovarian, breast, uterine, cervical, prostate, lung, colon and pancreatic cancers as well as leukemia and lymphoma.

Emmy Award-winning TV personality Jill Martin, a past Spirit honoree, donated her time and talent as emcee. Women’s Division president Carol Roaman and executive board members Andrea Stark and Terri Goldberg served as event chairs.

Distinguished guests included past Sprit honorees actress Christine Baranski, Olympic figure-skating champion Sarah Hughes, and longtime Women’s Division board members Broadway producer Daryl Roth and art collector/philanthropist Emily Fisher Landau; Dr. Steven Safyer, president and CEO of Montefiore Health System; Dr. Philip O. Ozuah, executive vice president and COO of Montefiore; Roger W. Einiger, chair of Einstein’s Board of Overseers; and Dr. Ruth L. Gottesman, immediate past chair.

A Heartfelt Presentation

Allen M. Spiegel, M.D., Einstein’s Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean, introduced a video detailing how Drs. Hsu and Pass and a team of Montefiore doctors provided lifesaving heart-transplant surgery to Brianna Barker, age 17. Ms. Barker then took the podium to rousing applause. She asked Dean Spiegel and Ms. Martin to join her in presenting Spirit of Achievement awards to Drs. Hsu and Pass. Click above to view the video about her amazing story.

Stellar Tributes

In her acceptance remarks, Ms. Bergen described the work of the doctors at Einstein and Montefiore as "staggering" and called Drs. Hsu and Pass "my new heroes." She complimented the Women's Division, declaring, "I salute you and have great respect for the work you do."

Ms. Fleming praised Einstein cancer research. Click below to view her remarks.
