An exchange of signals between macrophages (red) and tumor cells (green) prompts tumor cells to migrate toward blood vessels and penetrate the blood vessel wall. Metastasis (cancer spread) occurs when these tumor cells are carried to distant parts of the body, where they leave the vessels and seed new tumors.
