Deans of the Associated Medical Schools of New York (AMSNY), including Einstein’s Dr. Allen M. Spiegel, met with members of the House and Senate during their annual Capitol Hill Advocacy trip to Washington DC. on July 29 and 30. Among the members of Capitol Hill the deans visited was Senator Tom Harkin, of Iowa, who they congratulated on his approaching retirement following 40 years of distinguished public service.
AMSNY has endorsed Senator Harkin’s proposed legislation, "Accelerating Biomedical Research Act," which would increase funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The bill would create a budget cap adjustment over the remaining years of the Budget Control Act to allow the appropriations committees to generally restore the purchasing power the NIH would have had if funding had kept pace with inflation since 2003. It would provide up to $46.2 billion at the end of the seven-year period between fiscal years 2015 and 2021.
Other initiatives the group supported include a bipartisan initiative called, "21st Century Cures," written by House Energy and Commerce chair Fred Upton and Representative Diana DeGette. This bill is aimed at improving the process for approving new drugs and devices and bringing them to market by engaging stakeholders through a variety of means.
