Weathering the Storm: Some Helpful Tips

  • Keep tuned to a local radio or television station for the latest Weather Service advisories as well as special instructions from local government.
  • Use stairs, rather than elevators, whenever possible as you'll want to avoid getting caught on an elevator in the event of a power outage.
  • Close and secure windows in offices, apartments and common areas.
  • Prepare an emergency supply kit that includes bottled water, a flashlight and battery-powered radio, and fresh batteries.
  • Take caution if you need to use the telephone during an electrical storm.
  • Stay away from the perimeter of any building and exterior glass.
  • Following the directions of campus authorities, as well as advice of the New York City Office of Emergency Management (www.nyc.gov/html/oem).
